Blast from the Past

Vintage finds look right at home alongside
modern finishes in this farmhouse kitchen.

BY KARI WILSON HERMANN, MISSOURI

_ grew up watching my mother cooking and
canning at her stove, and when my husband and I decided to remodel the kitchen in our
110-year-old farmhouse, we kept my mother’s kitchen in mind as a source of inspiration.

We tried to keep the budget low. The cabinets are stock hickory, but I think they look as if they could have
been made from trees on the property.

The slate tile is forgiving. I gave up trying to convince my husband, sons and grandchildren to take off their shoes when they come inside, and instead I focused on choosing a flooring material that would wear well.
We were delighted to find original headboard on the ceiling and walls, under paneling from the 1960s. It’s now one of my favorite things about our kitchen.
The vintage apron sink from a local farmhouse is another favorite. I like to imagine all the meals that

were prepped there throughout the decades. When I’m

Kari kept her remodeling budget in check by buying stock

when families would skip the
interstate and travel the back roads. Warm fuzzy memories of camping
at Kansas’ Melvern Lake with my best friend, Vicki, and her family in
their vintage 1960s Shasta travel trailer came to mind. We had floated down the road in a roomy green ’76 Ford Crown Victoria pulling their
well-used but comfortable camper.
Today, glamping structures like these are popular with both the older and younger generations who admire them for their classic streamlined simplicity. Vintage camper shows like the one in Elk Falls bring together people from all walks of life who share a love for these works of art. ■

Happy Camper

My family and I were looking for something fun to do together
during the pandemic, and we had always dreamed of traveling in our own camper. So we chose to buy a fixer-upper and renovate it. After some searching, we
found a free 1970s camper with
good bones and got to work. The entire inside got a fresh coat of paint. We also added a wood countertop that we made ourselves, and we updated the interior and exterior lighting. We kept the outside simple and fixed it up just by giving it a good wash and by freshening up the original white paint so that it looked new again. Originally, I was going to paint the yellow stripe black, but my dad said not
to ruin the retro vibe. He was right.
All in all, fixing up the camper

was a great family project. We «
worked on it in the spring and o
enjoyed it all summer!

Levels and plumb lines offer up proof of accuracy—evidence of a rational and wellordered world.

Both will probably always remind me of my father, Clayton Stoker.

My dad owned a dairy farm for 40 years. He led his Holsteins into their barn stalls twice each day, 365 days a year, to milk them. At 4 a.m. every day, he was up and ready to start working, regardless of the
weather. He rarely took vacations. And when he was forced to sell his herd, he still
managed to pay the bills for a while longer by harvesting corn and soybeans.
That all changed in 1984, the year that the nation’s farm crisis peaked. Dad lost everything: his land, home and livestock. The loss stung, but he managed to find his
